Defining Democracy

Democracy is a form of government in which the supreme power is held by the people. The word democracy is taken from the Greek word "dimokratia" which means "popular rule". It is basically a belief that the country should be controlled the way the citizen's believe is right.
Democrats believe that "the people have the power", and it is based on the trust between the government and the people. Democracy is:
*Majority rule, minority rights
*Balance of power
*Individual beliefs
*Participation
*Not giving all the power to the gov
*Equal vote, equal chance at life
*Democracy is only as strong as the people
*We the people (from the Constitution)
*Freedom
